Attaullah Tarar Clarifies No Deadlock Over 27th Constitutional Changes

Islamabad, Pakistan – Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Attaullah Tarar, has reassured the public that there is no deadlock concerning the 27th Constitutional Amendment. Speaking to the media at the Parliament House in Islamabad, he highlighted that the Constitution of Pakistan is a dynamic, evolving document that undergoes continuous improvement.

Ongoing Debates on 27th Constitutional Amendment

Tarar confirmed that extensive debates are taking place in Parliament regarding the 27th Amendment. The amendment aims to promote good governance, strengthen the relationship between the Federation and the provinces, and enhance Pakistan’s national defense.

He explained that the proposed amendment has been drafted by carefully considering best international practices in constitutional reforms.

Prime Minister’s Initiative on Immunity Clause

The Information Minister also discussed the Prime Minister’s decision to withdraw immunity in the proposed amendment. He praised this as a positive step and a welcoming gesture, adding that the clause related to immunity has already been removed by the parliamentary committee.

Immunity for the President Under Global Norms

In response to questions regarding the proposed immunity for the President under the 27th Constitutional Amendment, Tarar explained that immunity for Heads of State is a standard practice worldwide. He reiterated that the amendment is in line with global norms concerning presidential immunity.

Establishment of Constitutional Courts in Pakistan

Tarar further elaborated on the long-discussed concept of establishing Constitutional Courts in Pakistan. He noted that the idea has been in the debate since the Charter of Democracy was signed and is now nearing its final stages.

The demand to establish Constitutional Courts has been a joint initiative by the PML-N, PPP, and Awami National Party. With discussions progressing, the proposal is now reaching its logical conclusion.

Impact of Constitutional Bench Under the 26th Amendment

Lastly, the Minister highlighted the success of the Constitutional Bench formed under the 26th Constitutional Amendment, which has significantly reduced the workload of the judiciary and enhanced the efficiency of the courts.
